Domain Authority From Scratch: A $0 Press Release Campaign

309 referring domains | $0 budget | DR 0 → 6 | first Google AI Overviews citation

APSentra had a brand-new domain, no budget for paid links and a market to enter. In 2 months, a press release campaign took the site from almost no trust signals to 309 referring domains. Here is how it worked.

About APSentra

APSentra is a procurement software platform that helps companies manage and simplify their procurement work. They had just started entering the North American market and had no backlinks, no organic visibility and no digital footprint online, which meant every trust signal had to be built from zero.

The challenge: a blank slate and no budget

For SEO, a new domain is the hardest place to start. Search engines have nothing to trust, and every number begins at zero: Domain Rating, referring domains and organic keywords. On top of that, there was $0 for paid placements.

APSentra needed two things, fast:

  • Visibility for its North American launch and its new “Behind Procurement” webinar series
  • Domain authority to support future SEO and content work, without paying for links

Guest posts and outreach take months and need either a budget or content to trade. A new domain has neither trust nor leverage to get links quickly that way.

The strategy: real news plus free wire distribution

We did not wait to build authority slowly. We used the client’s own news, the North American launch and the webinar series on procurement and AI, as the base for a press release campaign. We sent it out through free and low-cost wire and syndication channels.

This worked for three reasons:

  • Real news gets picked up. A market launch and a webinar on finance and AI are relevant to procurement, business and government-contracting readers.
  • Wire syndication multiplies reach. One release sent to a network like EIN Presswire is republished by dozens of independent sites, and each one becomes its own referring domain.
  • Speed beats perfection on a cold-start domain. We went for breadth: as many independent, indexed sites as possible, as quickly as possible.

What we did

We sent out two stories:

  1. “APSentra Launches North American Enterprise Procurement Tool”
  2. “APSentra Expands to North America and Launches Behind Procurement Webinar Series”

Both were picked up and republished on 13+ independent domains in about 2 months, with no paid placement fees. The coverage came from four groups:

  • National wire syndication: AP News, EIN Presswire (US and Canada editions), OpenPR
  • Business & regional news: Knox News, WDHN, N24
  • Industry/vertical outlets: SamSearch (government contracting news), Cases.media, Qwoted
  • PR aggregators & startup press: PRLog, IssueWire, Newsbywire, StartupMafia

See the live examples: the AP News release and the EIN Presswire Canada edition.

Results in 2 months

  • Domain Rating (DR): 0 → 6
  • Backlinks: ~10 → 320 (+233)
  • Referring domains: ~10 → 309 (+230)
  • Organic keywords: 0 → 1 (Top 3)
  • Google AI Overviews citations: 0 → 1

The key number is referring domains, not backlinks. Many different sites linking to a new domain is a strong trust signal, and each outlet that republishes a release counts as its own domain.

The domain also appears in Google AI Overviews. AI answer engines often use fresh, widely syndicated press coverage, and this campaign gave them exactly that. All placements are indexed and still live, and tools like Ahrefs recognize the backlinks.

Examples:

Why it worked

  • No cost, quick start. No outreach, no negotiation and no guest post fees. The client’s own news did the work.
  • Variety from day one. Wire distribution spreads a story across many independent sites at once, which is what a new domain needs.
  • Links kept coming. After the first push, aggregators and niche sites kept republishing the releases for weeks.
  • Relevant outlets. The industry angle brought in government-contracting and business media, not just generic PR sites. Relevant links are worth more than their domain numbers show.
  • A base to build on. The campaign gave the domain authority, indexing and trust, so later SEO and content work pays off more.
All placements were successfully indexed and remain valid, with backlinks recognized by SEO tools such as Ahrefs.

Key takeaway

You don’t need a big budget or months of outreach to give a new domain its first real trust signals. A timely, newsworthy press release sent through free wire channels took APSentra from zero authority to 309 referring domains in 2 months. It also laid the base for keyword rankings and visibility in AI search answers.
